The little dog known as the Havanese originated many years ago in Cuba, Bichon breeds {whom the havanese is a member} were very fationable in europe during the Renaissance and many of the wealthy merchant seamen brought little dogs with them from europe to woo the beautifull cuban maidens. When spain ended the trade monopoly in cuba the island began to flurish, many imagrants arrived in cuba to work and make their fortunes many came from the french collonies of Santa Domingo and Haiti, bringing with them not only their wealth and culture but also their beloved dogs. The havanese were the prefered pet of the wealthy but fell out of favour and became the love and family pets of ordinary cuban familys. The havanese numbers were very depleated in the 50s due to the Revolution when many cubans fled the country taking their pets with them. To this day the Havanese is a much loved pet of the cuban people and has gone from being a loved pet to also being a valued show dog enjoying great success due to their stunning movement glamour and happy disposition.

The Kennel Club recognised the Havanese in 1997 entering them onto the Import Register which enabled the havanese to be shown at open and championship shows.. In the year 2000 we moved forward again when the KC moved us from the import register to rare breed status where we are today
